As a land of gold and riches, Rajasthan in medieval and ancient times was quite the coveted place for invaders, conquerors and marauders.

This necessitated the need for formidable forts. The “Land of Kings” Rajasthan has hundreds of forts dotted across its landscape. But very few match the grandeur and historical significance of the Amber Fort. Amber was the principal residence of the Maharaja before a new city was constructed in Jaipur in the early 18^th century.

Also known as Amer Fort, this iconic fort was built by Raja Man Singh I in 1592 AD. It lies perched on top of the Amer Hill 6 miles outside of the Jaipur city center and is one of Jaipur’s biggest attractions.

It is only fair that the “Land of Kings” has its fair share of grand Palaces and Havelis (castle-like Hindustani mansions).

No palace in Rajasthan is grander than Jaipur’s City Palace—the residence of the Maharaja and the headquarters of the Kingdom of Jaipur (1028-1949 AD).

Replacing Amber Fort, the City Palace has remained the abode of the Maharaja since its construction in 1732 AD.

Constructed in the Vastushastra style (a blend of Rajput and Mughal architecture), it is one of India’s greatest palaces.

The City Palace Complex houses various other other buildings (like the Sawai Man Singh II Museum), royal courtyards, galleries and restaurants.

Astronomy has played a huge part in determining how Rajasthani Maharajas made their decisions. Important decisions like waging wars, choosing royal wedding dates, and new governance initiatives were taken after observing celestial bodies.

Constructed in 1734 AD, the Jantar Mantar Astronomical Observatory lies adjacent to the City Palace and Hawa Mahal.

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Jantar Mantar houses the world’s largest stone sundial, which makes the observation of astronomical positions possible with the naked eye.

Jaipur is known as the Pink City due to its stunning Pink architectural mystique—considered the color of hospitality in Rajasthan.

The Palace of Winds (Hawa Mahal) was originally meant as an extension of the City Palace and served as the Zanana Chamber (women’s chamber). From its honey-comb five-story towering structure with 953 small Jharokas (windows), the royal ladies could get a view of the ongoings of the city.

Built in 1799 AD by Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh, the Hawa Mahal is a stunning visual marvel made out of pink and red sandstone.

Jal Mahal or the “Water Palace” is snuggled in a tiny man-made island in the middle of the Man Sagar Lake, 6 miles north of Jaipur.

This three-story building that shines like a pearl in the middle of a serene lake was constructed in 1799 AD.

Maharaja Jai Singh II wanted a place that was secluded, peaceful and serene. Jal Mahal oozes just that—the perfect serenity surrounded by a beautiful lake and the scenic Nahargarh mountains.

Jaipur was so precious a city it needed more than one forts to protect it. Jaigarh Fort along with Amber and Nahargarh forts formed a formidable trio that protected the city.

Perched atop the Hill of Eagles in the Aravalli Range, Jaigarh Fort overlooks the Amber Fort. It originally served as a second line of defense if the fort residence of the then Maharaja at Amber Fort was attacked.

Sprawling over 3 kilometers at a height of 400 m above the Amber, this fort gives you great views of the Aravalli Hills.
